Nine Step Method for Internet Marketing

Today, I am sharing the nine essential steps I teach in my community college class series. These classes are for small businesses, marketers, and entrepreneurs who want to better understand where to start or where to fine-tune their existing online marketing efforts.

The world of internet marketing offers many options, and I've shared my nine-step method with dozens of marketing agencies, who all say that this is what they tell their clients they should do.

I firmly believe you can learn how to do online marketing yourself. Or if you are hiring help, learn what to expect from them and understand the terminology.

Self- Assessment

Before reading the steps below, take a moment to complete a self-assessment survey I created that will help you gauge your current understanding.

The Nine Steps

Step 1: Targeting

Successful internet marketing begins with pinpointing your ideal audience. It's like setting up a lighthouse that guides ships—know who you're trying to reach so you can direct your marketing efforts to them. People often refer to a “niche,” which is a targeted audience.

Step 2: Content

Content is the beacon that catches your audience's eye. Supplying valuable and relevant information will attract your target market and keep them engaged and coming back for more. Internet marketing requires creating and posting content that appeals to your audience, not just promotes your products or services.

Step 3: Branding

Your brand is your signature on the web. Create a name and image that resonate across the digital landscape, making it easy for customers to remember and recognize you in the sea of online noise. Be consistent with your name and graphics to make your brand more straightforward to find.

Step 4: Website

Consider your website as your online storefront. It needs to be inviting and informative, providing a seamless experience for visitors. This means having clear navigation, responsive design, and valuable content that reflects your brand. You have more control over your website than any other online place.

Step 5: Search Marketing

Visibility is key. Implementing Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and paid search strategies will ensure your business rises to the top of search results, making it easier for potential customers to find you.

Step 6: Social Media Marketing

Social media platforms are the town squares of the internet—places where people gather and converse. Establish a presence on the networks to connect with your audience where they spend significant time.

Step 7: Email Marketing

Email is a direct line to your audience. Use it to distribute information and offers to individuals who have already shown interest in your brand, nurturing those relationships and encouraging repeat business.

Step 8: E-commerce

Efficiently delivering your products and services online and handling transactions can streamline your business and provide convenience for your customers.

Step 9: Planning

A well-crafted plan is your marketing map. It organizes your route, tracks your progress, and helps you stay focused on your marketing goals.

Wrap-Up

Take the self-assessment to gauge your understanding of these critical steps. The answers will help you learn more about each aspect of internet marketing and help you determine your strengths and weaknesses.
