5 Things to Learn About a Developers Conference
Recently you may have heard about Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). For years technology companies have held developer conferences to reach software application creators to inform them about new software and hardware features that are planned so the developers can create applications that include these new features.
Apple's annual conference takes place around June every year, but other large technology companies hold annual meetings. These conferences are essential because software applications are what people and organizations use, and without these applications, no one would find the technology useful.
What are these conferences like?
Developer conferences are usually significant events held at a conference center where thousands of people from all over the world could attend. These conferences have large meetings for a presentation of interest to everyone in attendance and smaller breakout presentations for more specialized topics. These meetings and presentations run all day, sometimes for several days or even a week.
When the technology became available for video recording and streaming, developers could attend from anywhere in the world. Developer conferences usually have an attendance fee, and only members of the tech company's developer program and the press are invited.
Why have a developer conference?
The presentations cover software and hardware features that the technology company plans to introduce in their products soon, usually from a few months to within a year. While the features aren't available in the products the tech company is shipping now, it's vital to give app developers advance information so the programmers can start to incorporate these features into their applications. When the tech company releases the software or hardware to the public, there are applications available that take advantage of these new features.
By giving the programmers early access to the new technology, programmers can start development sooner and have applications available when the new features are released. Programmers and app creators are members of the tech company's developer program and, in addition to the conference, receive early releases of the software and have access to support resources.
Who has developer conferences?
Apple's WWDC is one of the most significant developer conferences, but it's not the only one. Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon, and Oracle are some of the large technology companies that hold annual developer conferences. And many smaller tech companies have similar events. Since technology is always changing and enhanced, the annual developer conference is an ongoing tech industry ritual and has been taking place for years.
What is discussed?
If you're a consumer or an organization that uses the tech company's software or hardware, you might not ever need to attend a developer conference. If, however, you develop applications, you're a developer and are probably going to be interested in new capabilities. An example is when a new hardware product is planned for release, and software is made to give application developers a chance to create apps. Like when the Apple Watch was announced.
When the watch was announced, there were no apps for it. Still, by announcing it and the Watch OS software at a developer's conference, Apple was able to introduce it to app creators, so when it was available for purchase, buyers had apps they could use right away. Presentations were held at the developer conference that educated the app programmers on the watch and features to start developing apps.
What else?
In addition to developers, the press and investors pay attention to what happens at developer conferences. Even though a specific product may not be announced, the software that's shown often hints at new hardware and other enhancements that fuel speculation about what might be publicly announced soon. Since tech companies are such a large part of our economy, their announcements can have a massive impact on the sale of new products, jobs, and investments.
Developer conferences not only give the app developers insight into the future but others as well. Apple and other tech companies make many of the keynote presentations available to the public, so if you're ever interested, you can keep up on the latest and developers.
